Travel + Leisure magazine announced the results of its 25th annual World’s Best Awards with Hotel Amparo in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico receiving top honors as the “#1 City Hotel in Mexico” and the “#2 Hotel in the World” with an overall score of 99.23 out of 100. This recognition marks the hotel’s debut on the esteemed awards list which celebrates the world’s best hotels, resorts, destinations, airlines, cruise lines and more.
Hotel Amparo is a boutique urban retreat in the center of the historic colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, and is the first hospitality venture by Houston based owners Taylor Goodall (Montgomery Academy Class of 2000) and his wife Mariana Barran de Goodall. The hotel itself is a residential-style hideaway featuring just five guest rooms, a high-end coffee bar and a rooftop wine bar/restaurant. The building, historically the mayor’s private residence, dates back more than 300 years.
The interior spaces showcase both the building’s original Spanish colonial-style architecture and the mid-century furnishings collected from around the world. Tall dark wood-plank doors open to reveal original reddish-brown tiles and beams, bright white walls, original wood paneling and a vibrant yellow-green-blue-and-red color scheme. All of the guest suites are situated around one of two courtyards and feature bedding, hand towels and linens custom-made by acclaimed Hibiscus Linens, the traditional textile and needlework company owned by Mariana Barran de Goodall.
At the heart of the hotel is Bar Margaret All Day Café featuring a modern approach on traditional Mexican “comfort food” and a coffee program using only Mexican-grown and roasted beans. Additionally, Bar Margaret All Day Café offers an intimate, limited seating rooftop wine bar with a heavy emphasis on European small and low-intervention producers, most of which have never previously been imported to Mexico. The cocktail menu compliments the food program and is influenced by simple, agave-driven drinks. Bar Margaret was named after Taylor Goodall’s illustrious grandmother and Montgomery doyenne, the late Margaret Garrett.
Hotel Amparo, having recently opened its doors in January 2019, has quickly established itself among the best hotels in Mexico and around the world. To determine winners of this coveted industry accolade, Travel + Leisure readers rated hotels on the following characteristics: rooms/facilities, location, service, food and value.
“We are honored to make our World’s Best Awards debut as the Top City Hotel in Mexico,” said Mariana Barran de Goodall, co-owner of Hotel Amparo. "My husband Taylor and I sought to create a hotel experience unique for San Miguel, which was no small task given the city is already one of the most special places on Earth with several great hotels…so we are thrilled our guests and the magazine’s readers appreciate our vision. We pride ourselves in providing unparalleled customer service, and owe a great deal of gratitude to our dedicated team members, who work tirelessly to provide an authentic and memorable experience for our guests each and every day.”
The World’s Best Awards will be published in the August 2020 issue of Travel + Leisure. The full list is published exclusively online at www.travelandleisure.com/worldsbest.
