After a relatively light 2019 where he fought twice, Tuscaloosa’s Deon “The Equalizer” Nicholson will be moving up in class and visibility in 2020. His first fight of the year will be against Earl “The Flash” Newman (10-2-1, 7 KOs) of Brooklyn, NY in an eight-round cruiserweight match. The fight is scheduled for Saturday February 1st at the Beau Rivage Casino Resort in Biloxi, MS.
Nicholson is up for the challenge. In December, the undefeated boxer traveled to Salt Lake City and knocked out Robert Hill in the first round. When asked about what this next bout will mean, Nicholson had an immediate response.
“It means everything to me. It’s a big step in my career and a fight I’ve been waiting on. I’m looking forward to dominating.” Nicholson said.
In addition to a step up in competition, this will be Nicholson’s first bout at Beau Rivage. The fight presented by Premier Boxing Champions, the same company behind the upcoming Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury bout coming later in February at the MGM Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Nicholson vs. Newman will tentatively be televised live on FS1. The card starts at 7 PM Central time.
Nicholson (12-0, 12 KOs) has already researched his opponent. On Newman, he said “He’s a good boxer, nice foot work and hand speed. He’s coming to fight, but he has nothing that I haven’t seen.”
Newman is not new to Biloxi or tough opponents. He fought there in May and lost via knockout to undefeated Efetobor Apochi. Apochi has knocked out all nine of his opponents. Newman is currently the 36th ranked cruiserweight in the United States according to Boxrec. Nichols is 11th.
The bout will be on the undercard of the Yordenis Ugas vs Mike Dallas, Jr. main event. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com and at the Beau Rivage.
