Trinity handed Catholic its first loss to an in-state team in more than a month on Thursday, beating the Knights 3-1 in a 3A Area 6 match in the Catholic gym.

Trinity won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-17 before falling in the third set 18-25. The Wildcats rallied to win the fourth set 26-24, handing Catholic its first loss since a tournament loss to Brookstone School of Columbus, Ga., on Sept. 11, and the first to an in-state school since losing in the finals of the Mayor’s Cup to Bayside Academy on Aug. 28.

The win allowed the Wildcats to keep alive their hopes of earning the top seed (and the host site) for the upcoming area tournament. Catholic meets Prattville Christian next Thursday in the Catholic gym and a PCA victory would leave all three teams tied in the area standings at 2-2. Trinity’s area winning percentage of .533 would make the Wildcats first if Catholic was swept in three sets and tied with Catholic atop the standings if PCA won in four sets.

A Catholic victory (or a Catholic loss in five sets) would give the area title to the Knights.

For the Wildcats, Reese Patterson had 22 kills, Emma Moody had 12 and Emma Kate Smith had 10 in the win over the Knights, while Addison Cherry had 40 assists. Along the back row, Isabel Hill led the defense with 18 digs, while Ella Grace Lowe and Mary Alice Sasser each had nine digs and Gray Brendle had eight.

Trinity (36-6) won its ninth consecutive match in the process and now has earned a week off. The Wildcats return to action on Thursday with a tri-match at home against Providence Christian and Prattville.

Catholic (29-6) returns to the floor on Tuesday with a tri-match at Pike Road featuring the Patriots and Montgomery Academy before returning home for Thursday’s match with PCA.
