Pike Road girls celebrate first-ever varsity victory after win over Russell County.


Montgomery Academy 9, Catholic 0

The defending 4A-5A state champions opened the season with a 9-0 shutout of Catholic in a section match on Wednesday.

Singles winners for Montgomery Academy were William Robertson, Hamilton Chapman, Alec Chandler, Whit Davis, Guy Hughes and John Alford. Doubles winners were Robertson and Chandler, Gaines Freeman and Easton Strickler and Ron Sharma and Henry Lawson.

Montgomery Academy returns to action on Tuesday at Lagoon Park Tennis Center against Charles Henderson.


Pike Road 12, Russell County 2

PIKE ROAD -- The Pike Road girls won their first-ever varsity contest with a rout of Russell County.

Delaney Hawthorne scored six of the goals and Eva Newenschwander added four for the Patriots, with Madison Onofry and Shelby Johnson scoring a goal each. Onofry and Naomi Valentine each had three assists, while Alena Hall had eight saves in goal.

Pike Road (1-0) will play in the Capital of Dreams Tournament in Montgomery this weekend at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.


Pike Road 2, Alabama Christian 1

Carson Fike scored the game winner with seven minutes left as Pike Road edged Alabama Christian 2-1.

Luca Depreitere scored the other goal for the Patriots and Ian Cuenco had an assist. Konnor Reybitz had seven saves in goal.

Pike Road 2, Russell County 1

Carson Fike scored both goals with Ian Cuenco assisting on one of them as Pike Road defeated Russell County 2-1. Konnor Reybitz had nine saves in goal.

Pike Road returns to action this weekend in the Capital of Dreams tournament in Montgomery.
