Prattville 2, Providence Christian 0

The Lions bounced back from their first back-to-back losses of the season with a 2-0 win over Providence Christian in the final game of the 30th FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Paterson Field.

Seniors Will Baskin and Grant Williams combined to pitch a three-hit shutout and the defense responded with its best game in the tournament, completing a big double play in the second inning and only allowing two Eagles to reach second base in the game.

Baskin (1-0) earned the win with a strong start, allowing just two hits in five innings while striking out one and walking two. Williams pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit and walking none.

The Lions picked up two runs in the top of the fourth as Drew Jolley reached on an error, and Williams laid a nice bunt single down the first base line with nobody out. Landon Sumrall delivered a key two-out RBI single to right, driving in Jolley, and Mason Piper followed with an RBI single to left to drive in Williams.

Sumrall went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Tanner Vance went 2 for 4, including a stand-up triple. For the tournament, Vance went 6 for 10 with a double, triple, an RBI, six runs scored, five walks, one hit by pitch and five stolen bases as the leadoff batter. Jolley also went 6 for 10 with a pair of doubles, seven RBIs, three runs scored, a pair of walks and twice he was hit by a pitch. Williams went 4 for 9 with a double, three runs scored and a sacrifice bunt.

Prattville (9-5) went 2-2 in the tournament and play host to Opelika on Wednesday.

Trinity 9, Prattville Christian 7

Trinity scored seven runs in the final two innings to rally from a 6-2 deficit and defeat Prattville Christian 9-7 in the 30th FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Baseball Tournament at Riverwalk Stadium on Saturday.

The Wildcats were originally scheduled to play Pike Road, but changes in the schedule caused Pike Road to drop out and they were replaced by Prattville Christian.

DM Lieux went 2 for 3 with a triple and a pair of RBIs, Brady Rascoll went 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI and Walker McClinton went 1 for 2, scored three runs and drove in another for the Wildcats.

Fleming Hall went three innings, allowing six hits and three runs, one earned. Webber McClinton pitched 1.2 innings, giving up four hits and three runs and Wesley Stallings picked up the win in the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits.

Trinity (3-5) will play Alabama Christian at the AUM Baseball Complex on Monday before facing Bullock County in 4A Area 4 play later in the week.

Providence Christian 8, Catholic 7

Chapel Strickler drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to lift Providence Christian to an 8-7 victory over Catholic in the 30th FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Baseball Tournament at Paterson Field on Saturday.

Caleb McCreary drove in a pair of runs with RBI singles in the game and Jayden Phifer added an RBI single, part of an 11-hit attack by the Knights. Justin Rose led the offense with a 3 for 4 day at the plate.

Andrew Noell, the first of four pitchers for Catholic, went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Catholic. The Knights (6-5) return home to play host to Alabama Christian Academy on Tuesday.

BOYS SOCCER

Trinity 6, Houston Academy 0

Jackson Champion scored five goals and Tillman Clements added one as the Wildcats defeated Houston Academy 6-0 on Saturday.

Will Owen, Grayden Flowers, Bo Stewart, Kip Brown and Tate Bixeman had assists.

Trinity (7-4-1) will play at BTW Magnet in a 4A Area 2 match on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. James 1, John Carroll 1

BIRMINGHAM -- Katie Brightwell scored the Trojans’ lone goal with an assist by Riley Purcell as St. James and John Carroll battled to a 1-1 tie in the Catholic Cup at John Carroll High on Saturday morning.

The Trojans returned to action later in the day against St. John Paul II Catholic.

St. James 3, St. John Paul II Catholic 2

BIRMINGHAM -- St. James and St. John Paul II battled to a 2-2 tie before going to a shootout, won by St. James 4-2 in the Catholic Cup at John Carroll High on Saturday.

Hannah McCain scored the tying goal late in the second half after Ragan King scored the opening goal on a corner kick. King scored her goal with an assist by Katie Brightwell, while McCain’s goal was assisted by Natalie Barton.

Katie Irving recorded the shootout win with two saves out of the four shooters.

St. James returns home to play Catholic on Monday at Carlisle Field at 5:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Pike Road 9, Greenville 6

VALLEY -- Kayla Bester hit a two-run home run for the Patriots in a 9-6 win over Greenville in the first game of a tournament at Valley High on Saturday.

Kennedy Cuthbert was 2 for 2, Ameria Anderson was 1 for 2 with an RBI, Kailen Perdue was 2 for 2 with a double and a triple and Addison Belyeu was 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI for Pike Road.

Christina Juarez picked up the win in the circle and was 1 for 2 at the plate.

Sy’nya Edwards had a grand slam for Greenville, while Jaliah McMeans was 2 for 2 with a double.

The Patriots returned to action later in the tournament against Jeff Davis.

Pike Road 9, Jeff Davis 0

VALLEY -- Kailen Perdue pitched a complete game shutout, alllowing only a late-inning single to Khayliee Allen while striking out six and walking two in a 9-0 win over the Volunteers in a tournament at Valley High on Saturday.

Kayla Bester and Regan Fraser each went 2 for 2 to lead Pike Road, while Addison Belyeu and Haley Melton each had a double and an RBI. Ameria Anderson and Emmie Sphor each had a hit and Perdue had a hit and an RBI. Christina Juarez had a hit and drove in two runs.

Opelika 5, Pike Road 3

VALLEY -- The Patriots’ offense was held in check by Mackay Yountz and the Pike Road defense surrendered five unearned runs in a 5-3 loss to the Bulldogs in their final game at Valley High on Saturday.

Haley Melton suffered the loss in the circle for Pike Road, allowing six hits while striking out four and walking none.

Yountz, Jamiah Williams and Nylen Thomas each had two hits for Opelika, with Yountz and Thomas each contributing a double.

Yountz earned the win, striking out six and walking two and holding the Patriots to four hits. Ameria Anderson went 1 for 4 with an RBI, Kennedy Cuthbert went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a walk, Melton went 1 for 3 and Kailen Perdue went 1 for 3.

St. James 7, Beauregard 7

VALLEY -- St. James and Beauregard played to a 7-7 tie in the opening round of a tournament at Valley High on Saturday, with both teams scoring five runs in the first, a run in the third and another in the fourth before play was halted by a time limit.

Seventh grader Emily Darby hit her first home run to lead the Trojans, while Mary Olive Maddox went 2 for 3, scored a run and drove in two runs, KK Hall went 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI, Emerson Hagen went 1 for 1 with an RBI and Emily Needham went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Needham pitched the entire game, allowing five hits and seven runs while striking out six and walking two in four innings.

The Trojans returned to the tournament to face Russell County in pool play later on Saturday.

St. James 19, Russell County 0 (3)

VALLEY -- Emerson Hagen, Aleigha Davis and Peyton Middleton combined on a one-hit shutout as the Trojans defeated Russell County 19-0 in a game limited to three innings by the run rule on Saturday in a tournament at Valley High.

Hagen, Davis and Middleton each pitched an inning, with Hagen and Davis each throwing no-hit ball while striking out two.

Kaitlyn Hudson went 4 for 4 with a triple, scored four times and drove in four runs to lead the Trojans at the plate, while Sydney Johnston went 3 for 3 with a triple, scored a pair of runs and had five RBIs. Mary Olive Maddox went 1 for 2, scored a run and had three RBIs.

The Trojans advanced to bracket play in the rain-shortened tournament, facing Beauregard on Saturday.

Beauregard 5, St. James 3

VALLEY -- Beauregard eliminated St. James from the Valley High tournament, defeating the Trojans 5-3 in bracket play on Saturday.

KK Hall went 2 for 3 and scored a run, Peyton Dees went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Emily Needham went 1 for 2 and scored a run and Emily Darby went 1 for 1 and scored a run.

Needham took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings. Emerson Hagen pitched the remaining 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Saraland 7, Prattville 1

PRATTVILLE -- The Lions dropped their opening game in the PCA Tournament, losing to Saraland 7-1.

Kylie Jarman and Maddie Putteet both went 1 for 2 and Mady Cate Lindsey went 1 for 2 and scored the Lions’ only run. Zandia Bozeman drove in the run.

Kaytie Chandler took the loss in the circle as Prattville dropped to 9-10 and returned to action later in the day against Elmore County.

Prattville 7, Elmore County 3

PRATTVILLE -- Sarah Grace Jones allowed just three runs on five hits while striking out four in five innings of work as the Lions rebounded with a win over Elmore County in the PCA Tournament.

Jones went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double, a triple and a home run, scoring a run and driving in two.

Kaytie Chandler also went 3 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs, Kaylee Robles went 1 for 3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI and Jaci White went 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Prattville (10-10) returned to action in the tournament against Bob Jones.

Prattville 9, Bob Jones 7

PRATTVILLE -- Sarah Grace Jones picked up her second win in the tournament, coming on in relief of Kylie Jarman and pitching the final three innings, giving up five hits and striking out three while surrendering three unearned runs in a 9-7 win over Bob Jones in the PCA Tournament.

Kaylee Robles went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored, Kaytie Chandler went 1 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Maddie Putteet went 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI and Grace Easterling went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs for Prattville (11-10).

Saraland 4, Prattville 3

PRATTVILLE -- Prattville finished third in the PCA tournament, going 2-2 after losing 4-3 to Saraland.

Grace Easterling went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Kylie Jarman went 1 for 4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base and Maddie Putteet went 1 for 3 for the Lions.

Sarah Grace Jones went 1 for 3 and took the loss in the circle for the Lions, allowing six hits and three runs, two earned, in seven innings while striking out three.

Prattville (11-11) travels to Enterprise on Wednesday for a 7A Area 3 game at 3:30 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD

MA competes in King of the Mountain Meet

VESTAVIA HILLS -- Montgomery Academy went up to Vestavia Hills to compete against 50 of the top schools in the state on Saturday in a track meet. The MA boys were led by Grant Casey and Eli Jernigan. Casey was sixth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:28 and fifth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:42, both of which are currently the top times in 4A. Jernigan placed third in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.21, which is currently the second best time in 4A.

The lone point scorer for the MA girls was Elle Ingram, who placed sixth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:55, which is currently the top time in 4A.
