Montgomery Academy edges LAMP for section title

Montgomery Academy won the Class 4A-5A Section 2 tennis tournament on Tuesday, beating six other teams at O’Connor Tennis Center.

MA won the tournament with 54, beating LAMP (51), Andalusia (16), Valley (13), Carroll, Charles Henderson and Brewbaker Tech. The top two teams advance to the 4A-5A state tennis tournament at the Mobile Tennis Center on Monday and Tuesday.

In the singles finals, Montgomery Academy senior James Torbert defeated LAMP’s Arnob Guha 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1; LAMP junior Joshua Kim defeated Montgomery Academy’s William Robertson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2; Montgomery Academy’s Hamilton Chapman defeated LAMP’s Dishan Chandrasoma 7-5, 3-0 (ret.) at No. 3; LAMP’s Felix Wang defeated Montgomery Academy’s Alec Chandler 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4; Montgomery Academy’s Whit Davis defeated LAMP’s Eric Messina 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5; and LAMP eighth grader Edward Lee defeated Montgomery Academy’s Guy Hughes 7-2, 7-6 (9-7).

In the doubles finals, the Montgomery Academy tandem of Torbert and Robertson defeated LAMP’s Guha and Kim 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1; the MA duo of Chapman and Chandler defeated the LAMP team of Chandrasoma and Messina 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 2; and the LAMP pair of Wang and Jae Lee defeated the MA duo of Davis and Hughes 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3.


Prattville Christian 15-20, Southside Selma 0-2

PRATTVILLE – The Panthers picked up a pair of easy area victories as McKenzie Montgomery and Sally Swindall picked up wins in the circle.

Swindall also went 2-4 with four RBIs in the two wins, while Montgomery went 2 for 3 with four RBIs. Kathryn Fallen was 1 for 1 with a pair of RBIs and Sarah Williams was 2 for 4 with four RBIs.

Prattville Christian 12, Stanhope Elmore 2

PRATTVILLE – Carolyn Carter went 5 for 5 and drove in four runs with the help of a three-run home run as the Panthers cruised to an easy 12-2 win over Stanhope Elmore on Tuesday.

McKenzie Montgomery went 2 for 4 with four RBIs in the win, while Kathryn Fallen was 2 for 2 and drove in a run.

Paisley Wilson picked up the win in the circle for PCA (31-4-1), which travels to Tallassee on Thursday.


St. James 6, Prattville Christian 2

Jenna Brooke Warlick scored a pair of goals for Prattville Christian but it wasn’t enough as the Panthers dropped a 6-2 game at St. James on Tuesday. Brooke Callicott had an assist for PCA (6-3-2), which travels to Millbrook to play Stanhope Elmore on Thursday night.


Catholic 14, Brewbaker Tech 5

Christian Ivey went 5 for 5 and hit for the cycle as the Knights closed out their season with a 14-5 win over the Rams on Tuesday.

Ivey, a junior, hit two home runs, a triple, a double and a single, scoring five times, driving in eight runs and swiping a pair of bases in the process.

Marcus Dees went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Darian Riley went 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs and Brock Hudson went 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Colby Zaleski picked up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out four in three innings of work.

Catholic closed out the season at 10-16.

Tuscaloosa Academy 8, Patrician Academy 4

BUTLER -- Alex Warner improved to 5-1 by allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work as the Knights picked up a road victory over the Saints on Tuesday.

Mayes White had a pair of hits and 3 RBIs, including a solo home run in the first inning. Alex Johnson had a clutch triple late in the game to drive in two runs for Tuscaloosa Academy (19-8).
