Pike Road won the first volleyball area tournament championship in the program’s three-year history with a stunning five-set victory over Brewbaker Tech in the Rams’ gym on Wednesday evening.
The second-seeded Patriots defeated Beauregard in four sets in the semifinals, 25-17, 25-21, 24-26 and 25-11, after Brew Tech had advanced to the finals with a win over Tallassee.
In the finals, Brew Tech cruised to a 25-11 win in the opening set, then beat the Patriots 25-22 in the second set. Pike Road evened the match with 25-12 and 25-21 wins, then advanced out of the area for the first time in school history with a 15-11 win over the Rams, which had earned trips to the state tournament in each of the last three years.
Pike Road’s Sadie Davis had 29 digs and three aces in the area tournament, while Kendall Rice had 20 kills and four blocks and Christine Shelton had 24 assists and a pair of aces.
By beating Brew Tech, the Patriots avoided the 5A bracket that includes Providence Christian and Bayside Academy, the two 4A finalists a year ago and the two favorites expected to return to the state tournament this year.
That doesn’t mean Pike Road (10-15) has an easy path, however. The Patriots will play host to Rehobeth in a sub-regional matchup on Saturday in the Pike Road gym. The winner will advance to the regionals the following Thursday at Garrett Coliseum and face the winner of the Satsuma-Shelby County sub-regional match.
Rehobeth has advanced to the state tournament three times in the past six years, while Satsuma has made two trips in the last five years.
