Brewer Welch hit a trio of 3 pointers over the first three quarters to help Montgomery Academy built a lead and the Eagles held on to claim the Capital City Conference middle school boys basketball tournament championship with a 46-40 win over Catholic in the Trinity gym on Monday.
Welch hit a 3 pointer in the first quarter and another in the second as part of a 12-point half that helped the Eagles lead 22-17 at halftime.
DJ Vinson scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half, helping Montgomery Academy extend the lead to 10 points, 35-25, heading into the final quarter. A pair of baskets by Vinson and four free throws from Will Renfroe helped the Eagles hang on for the championship.
Welch finished with a game-high 18 points, followed by Vinson with 16 as the pair scored 34 of the Eagles’ 46 points.
Issac Dalhort led Catholic with 14 points, nine in the second half, followed by Jamerion Williams with nine and Skylar Stovall with seven.
