Montgomery Academy girls easily defeated Catholic Monday afternoon, 10-0. But that really wasn’t the biggest thing to happen on campus as the team honored a superstar of many years, Tara Katz. The celebration for Katz occurred when the match concluded.
Katz scored three goals against Catholic to run her career total to 211. That ties her for third on the all-time scoring of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Only two players have scored more goals: Jordan Richmond of Holy Spirit (232) and Amy Bayles of Mars Hill Bible School.
Katz, who scored her 200th goal on April 1, is viewed as an unselfish player by her teammates and coach. Senior Margaret Head, who has played alongside Katz for many years said, “She does everything well - offense and defense, and she is a very unselfish player and a great teammate.” Her coach, Carter Tuck said, “She is a wonderful player and a pleasure to coach her. She is very unselfish. It is awesome to have her on the field. She always brings something new.”
Katz, a University of Tennessee signee, never had setting records in mind. “My teammates are the reason for any success I have had. They push me to be the best I can be,” Katz said.
Katz has been playing since she was five years old and began playing on the MA varsity in the seventh grade.
The Eagles pushed their season record to 14-3-1. In addition to Katz, Brooke Horne also scored three goals. Leighton Robertson, Mead Robertson, Kaitlin Phenix and Head also scored for MA.
