Catholic's Cochran places third in heptathlon

HOOVER – Catholic senior Isabelle Cochran finished third in the Alabama High School Athletic Association state heptathlon that was held this week at Hoover High.

Baker High junior Kelsey White started out strong by winning the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash on Monday, then placed second in the long jump, fifth in the 800-meter run and 12th in the javelin to amass 4,357 points for first place in the seven-event competition.

McGill-Toolen junior Claire Frazier Bolton, who set a new heptathlon record with a time of 2:14.43 in the 800-meter run, finished second in the standings with 3,942 points.

Cochran finished third in the standings – and tops among non-Class 7A competitors -- with 3,906 points. She placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.97 seconds; tied for seventh in the high jump at 4 feet, 10.5 inches; 26th in the shot put with a throw of 21 feet, 11.75 inches; seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.24 seconds; seventh in the long jump at 15 feet, 9.5 inches; 10th in the javelin with a throw of 74 feet, 10 inches; and third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.75.

James Clemens sophomore Cadence Huntsinger won the long jump Tuesday with a 17-02.75 leap and finished fourth overall with 3,849 points. Falkville senior Kari Watts rounded out the top five with 3,849 points. Abigail Green of Huntsville won the javelin throw with a toss of 117-08.

Thirty girls competed in the AHSAA’s 47th heptathlon competition. Cochran was the only participant from the River Region.
