Jakolvian Johnson scored 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead top-ranked Evangel to a win in its area opener with the Generals in the Evangel gym on Friday night.
Tyree Curry had 12 points with eight assists and four steals while David Werking added 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. Jordan Grice finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
The Lions (17-1) will travel to Macon East Academy on Tuesday.
Catholic 107, Alabama Christian 75
Justin Bufford led five players in double figures with 30 points as the Knights rolled past ACA on Friday to improve to 3-0 in area play.
Bufford hit 11 of 19 shots from the field and had 15 rebounds, three steals, a pair of blocked shots and a pair of assists in the win.
DJ Carter followed with 23 points and four rebounds, Isaiah Kindle added 17 points and T.J. Dudley had 12 points, 15 rebounds and three assists as the Knights built a 24-point lead at the half.
Johntarius Green added 12 points, four rebounds and five assists as the Knights (17-3) opened up a lead in the Area 4 race over Trinity (1-1), LAMP (1-2) and ACA (0-2). The Knights travel to LAMP on Tuesday for another area contest.
Pike Road 63, Bullock County 61
PIKE ROAD -- Harrison Wallace scored 22 points to lead the Patriots to a 63-61 win in the team’s debut in its renovated gym on Friday night.
Shaun Holmes added 15 points and Blake Durham added 14 as Pike Road (15-3) improved to 2-0 in 3A Area 5 play ahead of Bullock County (1-1), Montgomery Academy (1-1) and St. James (0-2). The Patriots travel to Montgomery Academy on Tuesday.
St. James 60, LAMP 57
Bradley Thomas scored 21 points and Andrew Sadie added 19 as the Trojans handed the Tigers another close defeat in the LAMP gym on Friday night.
LAMP trailed by 10 points before scoring the final seven points of the third quarter to pull back into the game and set up an exciting finish. After LAMP trimmed the deficit to a point on a pair of Felix McGhee free throws with 1:28 remaining, a basket by K.J. Jackson put the Trojans back in front by three. Micah Boone cut the deficit to a point with a pair of free throws before Sadie sank a pair of free throws with 10.2 seconds left for the final margin.
Boone’s potential 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer bounced off the rim and the Tigers couldn’t get off another shot before the horn.
McGhee led LAMP with 16 points, four assists and four steals, followed by Quinn Sloane with 12 points and five rebounds and Boone with 10 points and six rebounds.
St. James (7-6) returns to action on Tuesday at Bullock County in a 3A Area 5 contest, while LAMP (8-13) entertains Catholic in a 4A Area 4 game on Tuesday.
Stanhope Elmore 78, LAMP 73 (OT)
MILLBROOK -- Quinn Sloane and Micah Boone each had 18 points but the Tigers couldn’t match the Mustangs in overtime, falling to Stanhope Elmore 78-73 on Thursday in the Stanhope Elmore gym.
Sloane had 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals for LAMP (8-12), while Boone had 18 points and six assists, Mitchell Sloane had 17 points and Felix McGhee added 11 points.
Catholic 40, Alabama Christian 38
Catholic turned up the defensive pressure on Alabama Christian in the second half and got several big baskets from Lorren Pharrams to escape with a 4A Area 4 victory over Alabama Christian in the Catholic gym on Friday night.
Michaelyn Manning scored 15 points in the first half as ACA built a 20-13 halftime lead, but was held to just two points in the second half with defense from Alanna Aiken and Jaye Bailey.
Meanwhile, Pharrams scored 15 of her 19 points in the third quarter to rally the Knights to a 30-29 lead heading into the final quarter. Pharrams also had six rebounds and four steals in the win. Nona Johnson added six points, 14 rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Catholic (10-3) improved to 2-1 in area play, trailing Trinity (2-0) and ahead of ACA (1-1) and LAMP (0-3) in area play heading into Tuesday’s game at LAMP.
Abbeville Christian 37, Evangel Christian 34
Zaria Johnson had 12 points and 20 rebounds but the Lady Lions fell short in their area opener against Abbeville Christian in the Evangel gym on Friday night.
Karley Blankenship also had 12 points for Evangel, which travels to Macon East on Tuesday.
St. James 51, LAMP 19
Hannah Grace Griggs scored 14 points to lead a balanced attack against the Tigers on Friday night in the LAMP gym.
St. James used 3-pointers by Griggs, Makenzie Corley and KK Hall to grab a quick 15-6 lead as the Trojans built a 20-point lead at the half by holding the Tigers to 10 points.
Hall added 11 points as six of the nine Trojans scored at least five points.
Aariel Johnson had six points to lead LAMP (2-15). The Golden Tigers play host to Catholic in a 4A Area 4 game on Tuesday.
St. James (10-6) travels to Bullock County for a 3A Area 5 game on Tuesday.
Stanhope Elmore 49, LAMP 45
MILLBROOK -- Kalieah Hollis had 13 points to help the Mustangs hold off LAMP on Thursday night in the Stanhope Elmore gym.
Caitlin Russell led LAMP with 17 points, followed by Aariel Johnson with 14 points.
