It was a historic day in Montgomery on Tuesday, October 8th. Was it the history I was hoping to make? No. Was it the history that Montgomery resoundingly chose? Yes.
Steven Reed won the mayoral runoff, and I congratulate him for running a successful campaign and energizing so much of Montgomery to rally behind him.
The runoff campaign was tough, bruising, yet productive. We had different ideas of what Montgomery needed moving forward but we both had a deep desire to help Montgomery.
But you know what? Steven and I still have respect for each other, and I ask that all of Montgomery do the same. Steven Reed is about to be sworn in as our Mayor, and we should get behind him.
I spent a fair amount of time with Steven during the campaign and he has many good ideas on how to move Montgomery forward. He is a very smart man with an open mind.
Our city is one with a powerful - yet hurtful - history. You’ve heard it said many times that Montgomery is the cradle of the confederacy and birthplace of Civil Rights. Now we are at the start of a new history, one where an African-American mayor - the first in 200 years - will lead our great city.
We have an amazing opportunity before us to show the world that race no longer matters in Montgomery. We are a city made up of united men and women who respect and love each other.
Steven Reed needs our support because he has significant challenges ahead of him to tackle. Our county school system is broken and most of our children are not receiving access to the quality education that they need and deserve. Our police force is understaffed and underpaid. Our streets are not as safe as they should be. Our economy is challenged due to a net loss of residents.
These issues can be improved, and we should help our new Mayor as he works to enhance our city. Each one of us can contribute in some way.
Even though I will not have the opportunity to lead the charge on addressing these problems as your mayor, I told Steven that I will step up and help him in any way he sees fit. Steven will be more successful in the face of these obstacles if we ALL step up and offer him our support. Let’s move forward to a brighter future together Montgomery with Steven Reed as our mayor.
