Alabama State Senator David Burkette (D-Montgomery) is said to be recovering after being hospitalized following an undisclosed condition. Inside Alabama Politics reported on December 29 that Burkette was hospitalized following a stroke, but that information has not yet been confirmed by Burkette's family.
Burkette won five elections last year to gain the seat, but still hasn't actually served in the Senate as yet. Burkette prevailed in special primary and runoff elections held after Burkette's predecessor, Quinton Ross, left the seat to take over as president of Alabama State University. Burkette then prevailed in another pair of primary and runoff election before his most recent victory in November's general election.
A spokesperson said the Burkette is alert and stable following his ordeal and added that his family is grateful for the thoughts and prayers they have received.
