Pike Road to celebrate a week of patriotism June 28 - July 4

Week of Patriotic Activities to Safely Celebrate Country and Community this Fourth of July

PIKE ROAD – The Fourth of July and related activities have always held a special place in the hearts of Pike Road, and the Town of Pike Road is excited to announce the Week of Patriotism! Beginning on June 28 and through the Fourth of July, the community is invited to participate in a variety of fun and commemorative activities designed to engage citizens of all ages in safe celebration of Independence Day. Together, we will explore the history of Pike Road, get creative, serve our neighbors, and celebrate both America and our special part of this great nation.

We will begin the week with a digital cookbook release on June 28, featuring memories and meals from across our community. All are invited to help us celebrate our community and history by sharing your family's favorite summer and Fourth of July recipes, memories, and traditions! Visit www.pikeroad.us or email info@pikeroad.us to submit photos, stories and recipes by June 24. On Monday, June 29, we will discuss the history of Pike Road on a special radio program, and the community is invited to participate in creating a handprint flag banner. This project will continue all week long at a variety of locations, including during the June 30 Community Blood Drive, 10 – 4 p.m. at Pike Road Town Hall (9575 Vaughn Rd). We are also excited to offer a flag exchange at this time. Citizens may drop off faded, weathered Star-Spangled Banners, and pick up a fresh, new flag from our team at Town Hall. With the help of local partners, we will properly dispose of your worn-out flags. Flag etiquette resources will be provided.

Later in the week, all ages will enjoy a community-wide scavenger hunt and share their spirit with DIY patriotic crafts and star-spangled outfits. We will reveal the completed handprint flag created throughout the week, and everyone can engage in the arts with a virtual art lesson from the Pike Road Arts Council. Finally, on the Fourth of July, we are excited to celebrate with a virtual concert featuring the people of Pike Road. Patriotic music will be shared throughout the day on our social media and website, pikeroad.us. We will also share photos collected throughout the week. We encourage you to explore and enjoy these virtual celebrations with your family!

“We are so thankful for the opportunity to offer safe, patriotic activities for all of our citizens during the Week of Patriotism,” said Mayor Gordon Stone. “We can’t wait to celebrate America in a way that is exemplifies the community spirit of our special hometown.”

In light of the COVID-19 challenge and social distancing recommendations, we will not wrap up the week with our traditional SummerFest celebration. However, the Week of Patriotism will enable our community to express their love for our country and patriotic spirit! We encourage you to explore opportunities to share, connect, and celebrate our community and our country by visiting www.pikeroad.us to learn more.

These activities are designed to allow for safety measures, including social distancing, as guided by both the Centers for Disease Control and Alabama Department of Public Health. Thank you for being respectful of social distancing and other health-related measures as we continue to combat the spread of COVID-19 together.
