On Monday, April 5, Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate presented a check to Elmore County Schools for the Alabama Farm to School meal reimbursement program. In 2020, the Alabama legislature approved $120,000 in the state budget specifically for the Farm to School meal reimbursement program. The goal of the program is to incentivize schools to serve more local, Alabama produce items to their students. Schools are eligible to receive an additional reimbursement of $0.25 per meal that features a fresh Alabama item. Since October of 2020, Elmore County Schools served more than 31,000 meals featuring an Alabama product. They served items such as persimmons, apples, and organic lettuce from four different Alabama farmers.
Commissioner Pate was joined by the State Superintendent of Education Dr. Eric Mackey and many others in presenting the check at Redland Elementary School on Monday. Elmore County is one of several schools utilizing the reimbursement program. Commissioner Pate is set to make several check presentations over the next few weeks.
